Each summer Story Theater Company offers a variety of camps tailored to different age ranges where kids have the opportunity to develop skills in the theater arts while building self-confidence in a safe and fun environment. STC’s camps are developed by professional educators and led by high quality, enthusiastic instructors.

- Grades are based on the grade student will enter in Fall 2023.
- Camps can fill very quickly. Class size is limited to keep the classes enjoyable for your child and maintain a proper teacher/student ratio.
- Payment via PayPal (credit/debit/PP) must be completed at the time of registration to reserve your spot.
- A limited number of partial, need-based scholarships are available for the summer camps. Please contact education@storytheatercompany.org for details and to request a scholarship form.

Pete The Cat
It’s time to get groovy! With a focus on creative exploration, we’ll play with theater, music, and crafts in the spirit of our favorite Pete the Cat stories by James Dean and Eric Litwin.
This camp includes a brief sharing time for parents at 11:30 am on Friday.

Dragons Love Tacos
It’s taco time! With a focus on creative exploration, we’ll play with theater, music, and crafts in the spirit of the book Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin & Daniel Salmieri.
This camp includes a brief sharing time for parents at 11:30 am on Friday.

Story Creation Experience
In this half-day camp, we will explore topics like improv, plot building, and character work to create stories from scratch. We’ll write down ideas, act things out, and perform a series of original short works at the end of Friday’s session. This session is a unique outlet for your theatrical creativity!

The History of Messy Rooms
Get ready to flex your imagination! In this camp, we will explore basic acting and staging techniques while working together to produce the humorous play, The History of Messy Rooms.
When a son asks his mom the age-old question, “Why do I have to make my bed?” a journey through time begins as she reveals the answer.
This camp includes a sharing time for parents and friends at 3:30 pm on Friday.
NOTE: This camp also includes a free matinee performance of STC’s High School Musical JR on Thursday, June 22.

Make a Scene!
In this camp, we’ll build our creative performance skills while learning about plot, character, theme, and staging.
Join us in telling a humorous story called The News Done Spread about an out of control chain of gossip leading to chaos at a local shopping mall.
This camp includes a brief sharing time for parents at 3:30 pm on Friday.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Based on the book by Eric Carle, this camp for ages 4 to 5 includes dramatic play, music, crafts, and an adorable sharing time for parents at the end!
Family sharing time will be at 11:15 am on Friday.

Camp Treasure Trunk
What will we find in the mysterious treasure trunk today? Let’s explore costumes, props, and set design – and have a lot of fun doing it!

Cardboard Creators: Scenic Design Introduction
In this camp, students will take a speedy journey through the scenic design process from concepts to building. They’ll practice using basic carpentry tools and learn painting technique while building their own large-scale world out of cardboard – one of the most flexible materials around!

TRAPPED! at STC
Do you wish you never had to leave STC? Well now you won’t be able to… until midnight.
But don’t worry! We’ll keep you busy with an escape room, games, karaoke, choreography, and more! We know you may miss your friends during the summer, so let’s get together and have a good time!
Group activities will be mandatory with some individual choice activities available later in the evening.
This will include snacks.

The Ordinary Lives of Superheroes
Designed for middle schoolers of every experience level, this camp will dive into topics like acting techniques, script analysis and character development. The week will culminate with a performance of Superheroes! With Great Power Comes Ordinary Responsibility by Ian McWethy.
For superheroes, saving the world is tough, but the time spent away from work is tougher. The Hulk has to do taxes, a crime-fighting sidekick joins a support group, and Batman goes stir-crazy without enough criminals to take down. SUPERHEROES is a funny, fast-paced series of vignettes that explores how the caped crusaders deal with life in street clothes.
This camp includes a participant pizza party followed by a showcase for parents and friends at 5:30 pm on Friday.

Musical Theater Mashup
Acting and singing skills go hand-in-hand on this musical journey! Each student will get to participate in ensemble and solo pieces, and we will work together to combine them into a single story.
This camp includes a participant pizza party followed by a showcase for parents and friends at 5:30 pm on Friday.

Magic Treehouse: Pirates Past Noon KIDS
(July Session)
Magic Tree House: Pirates Past Noon KIDS is an adaptation of the second of Mary Pope Osborne’s award-winning fantasy adventure books. This time around, Jack and Annie’s tree house takes them to an exotic island with pirates, where the two discover the power of friendship and the simple pleasures in everyday life.
This week will provide a fast-paced, fun education in musical theater (singing, dancing, and acting) while we work to stage this 30-minute musical.
This camp includes a Saturday (July 29) rehearsal session and pizza party at the Ames Public Library with a performance at 2:00 pm.

Fairy-Tale Problems
This camp will explore basic acting and staging techniques along with games and crafts. At the end, we’ll perform two humorous fairy-tale plays about characters who are trying to resolve some ridiculous problems.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
- Full refunds are offered in the event that a camp itself is canceled for any reason.
- In the event of insufficient registration for a camp, Story Theater Company reserves the right to cancel the camp (with a full refund provided to registrants).
- Requests for refunds made at least two weeks prior to the start of the camp will be granted, minus a 25% cancellation fee. Refund requests with less than two weeks’ notice will not be granted.
