James Reach’s David and Lisa follows two mentally disturbed adolescents–David, who is tortured by his extreme aversion to being touched, and Lisa, who has a split personality–during one term at a residential treatment center, where they have come under the sympathetic guidance of psychiatrist Alan Swinford and his staff. Based on the novel by eminent psychiatrist Theodore Isaac Rubin and the award-winning film of the same name, the drama brings laughter, heartbreak and suspense to an ultimately uplifting story.
This production is designed as an immersive experience for the cast and crew, providing them with the experience to work as an ensemble to create the entire production from the ground up. Two adult co-directors will lead the teens through a company/ensemble approach to not only the acting of the piece but also the creation of every aspect of the production, including the set, lighting, costume, property, and sound design.

This show will provide teens the experience working as an ensemble to create the entire production from the ground up. Typically, Story Theater Company productions are staffed by multiple adults in positions like Director, Stage Manager, Lighting Designer, Set Designer, Costume Designer, and Properties Designer. However, this show will have only two adult co-directors who will lead the teens through a company/ensemble approach to not only the acting of the piece but also the creation of every aspect of the production, including the set, lighting, costume, property, and sound design.
Part of our curriculum for this show includes being aware of and following budgets and details surrounding the financial aspects of staging a production. To complement this, several of the teens involved in Teen Theater Club have started an Indiegogo campaign to help defray some of the costs of adding a third show to our season.
